There’s something so special about a Detroit Athletic Club wedding—it brings timeless charm to a day that’s already unforgettable. Susie and Alex’s wedding was the perfect mix of romantic and elegant. Every detail was thoughtfully chosen, and every moment was full of love. From portraits at some of Detroit’s most iconic landmarks to a candlelit reception, their day felt effortlessly them. Keep reading, I think you’re going to love this one as much as I loved capturing it.

The Details, Getting Ready & First Look from This Detroit Athletic Club Wedding

Susie and Alex got ready at the Shinola Hotel, another one of my favorites for weddings with its classy, sophisticated vibe. Susie spent the morning in the bright Canfield Suite with her sisters. I’ll never get over this getting ready space. The lighting in this room was everything on that gloomy November day! Alex was with his groomsmen in one of the Attic Suites.

Overall, the whole morning felt laid-back. Full of laughter, a little champagne, and time to soak it all in. Later on, their first look took place on the rooftop of the Detroit Athletic Club, with the city skyline behind them. It was cold and windy, but they embraced it and shared a quiet moment before the day unfolded.

Portraits at Detroit Icons: DIA, Public Library & DAC

After their first look, we grabbed a few portraits on the way to their vintage 1940 Detroit Packard from Motor City Vintage Rentals. I just know it’s going to be a good day when one of their classic cars is part of the plans. It always adds the perfect touch of old-school charm. We made stops at some of Detroit’s most iconic spots, including the Detroit Institute of Arts and the Detroit Public Library, before heading back for their DAC wedding. Their wedding party kept it close-knit with siblings only: Susie’s sisters, her brother, and Alex’s brothers.

A Detroit Athletic Club Wedding Ceremony

Even though Susie and Alex chose to do a first look, you could still feel the emotion as she walked down the aisle. Alex’s reaction said it all. He was completely in the moment, holding back tears as he saw his bride all over again. Their Detroit Athletic Club wedding ceremony felt personal, heartfelt, and full of so much joy.

Cocktail Hour & Detroit Athletic Club Wedding Reception

After the ceremony, guests moved right into cocktail hour before Susie and Alex’s Detroit Athletic Club wedding reception. The reception was just as stunning as the rest of the day. Every detail was beautifully thought out. From the elegant black and white escort display to the soft candlelit tables with sleek glass and white floral touches, everything felt timeless. Their first dance felt like something out of a movie. The glow of chandeliers overhead and the warmth of their friends and family surrounding them made it unforgettable. And let me just say—checkered floors will always have my heart.

The speeches, especially from Susie’s father and her sisters, brought both laughter and tears. Truly moments to remember. I also love when couples are intentional about making speeches feel like part of the celebration instead of something tucked into dinner. Standing for toasts not only makes it feel more special, but it also creates a beautiful chance for more portraits in your full attire and some of the best candid photos.

A highlight of the night was the champagne tower, which added such a fun, celebratory vibe. Later, they changed into custom “Hubby” and “Wifey” bowling shirts embroidered with “Team Rohder” and their wedding date on the back. It was such a playful, personal touch. Late-night Detroit-style pizza definitely helped keep the party going. One of the most unique parts of a Detroit Athletic Club wedding is the vintage-style bowling alley on the fourth floor. It’s the perfect way to wrap up the night and makes the venue stand out for couples who want something classic with a twist.

A Note From Susie & Alex:

“I was lucky enough to find Patty through one of my best friends. Once I saw her photos, it made the decision of fining a photographer one of the easiest during the wedding process! We met Patty when she traveled to Chicago for our engagement photos and instantly hit it off. We had the best time getting to know her and she made us feel incredibly comfortable in front of the camera. It will forever be one of my favorite days/memories! She did such a phenomenal job on the day of our wedding, handled the timing of everything perfectly, and captured the day beautifully- i will cherish those photos forever. It’s a bonus that Patty has become a close friend- she truly cares and loves for her couples. Could not recommend Patty more and feel so lucky to have worked with her ❤️”
