Why Couples Choose the Detroit Athletic Club for Their Wedding

The Detroit Athletic Club is one of the city’s most prestigious private clubs, and that legacy carries through into its weddings. From the moment guests step inside, the space not only feels formal, but intentional and rooted in Detroit history.

A Detroit Athletic Club wedding is a great fit for couples who value:

– A classic venue that will never feel dated

– An elevated, full-service experience

– Downtown Detroit access without feeling public or chaotic

– Beautiful interiors that don’t require heavy décor

This venue is especially well-suited for couples planning a black-tie or semi-formal wedding with a traditional structure.

Detroit Athletic Club Wedding Venue Spaces

One of the biggest advantages of hosting a Detroit Athletic Club wedding is the variety of spaces available within the same building. This allows your day to flow naturally while still giving each event its own atmosphere.

Rooftop Terrace

The rooftop terrace is often used for cocktail hour, portraits, and first looks. It offers city views and a quieter moment during the day, especially nice for fall weddings or sunset photos! The views from the rooftop are incredible, and photos here are a must.

Cocktail Hour Spaces

Cocktail hours at the DAC typically take place in one of the club’s interior spaces, often close to where the reception is hosted. These rooms make it easy for guests to mingle while staying comfortable, especially during colder months.

Using interior spaces for cocktail hour also keeps the flow of the day seamless, with no need for guests to travel between locations. It’s a great option for couples who want everything to feel connected and relaxed.

Ceremony Spaces

Ceremonies are typically hosted in one of the club’s formal interior rooms, depending on guest count. These spaces work well for couples who want a refined ceremony setting without leaving the venue.

I also have many couples who have Catholic ceremonies at a beautiful nearby church. Whatever choice you make, DAC makes it easy to host your wedding here.

The Ballroom

The ballroom is the most popular choice for Detroit Athletic Club wedding receptions. It features tall ceilings, classic architectural details, and lots room for dinner, dancing, and entertainment.

From a guest perspective, the space feels formal but comfortable. From a photography standpoint, the ballroom photographs beautifully once the room fills with candlelight and movement!

Alternative Reception Spaces

While the ballroom is the most well-known reception space at the Detroit Athletic Club, it isn’t the only option. Depending on your guest count and vision, there are a few other ways to host a reception on-site.

One of my couples, Jaclyn and Max, chose to host their reception in a tented area in the club’s back courtyard, which isn’t a space commonly used for weddings. It was a refreshing change and photographed beautifully, especially for couples open to something a little different!

The Detroit Athletic Club Bowling Alley

Such a unique (and optional) aspect of a Detroit Athletic Club wedding is the club’s vintage-style bowling alley, which is available to couples hosting their wedding there. Tucked inside the fourth floor, it gives a completely different energy from the formal reception spaces and is a fun way to extend the celebration late into the night.

One of my couples, Susie and Alex, headed down to the bowling alley after their reception and changed into custom bowling shirts embroidered with their wedding date. It was a great way to end the night with friends, laughs, and some late night Detroit-style pizza. For couples who love the idea of a classic venue with something unexpected built in, the bowling alley is one of the reasons the Detroit Athletic Club really stands out.

Detroit Athletic Club Wedding Catering & Cuisine

One of the many things couples appreciate most about hosting a Detroit Athletic Club wedding is the in-house catering and service. The DAC’s culinary team works closely with couples throughout the planning process to create a menu that feels thoughtful and elevated.

Because food and beverage are handled on-site, everything feels seamless. From passed appetizers during cocktail hour to plated dinners and attentive table service, the experience reflects the club’s longstanding reputation for exceptional service. The staff is polished and professional, which allows the the day to unfold smoothly and keeps guests feeling well cared for.

Getting Ready at the Detroit Athletic Club

Many couples choose to get ready on-site or in nearby downtown hotels. The club’s interiors make for beautiful backdrops for portraits with it’s neutral tones and classic detailing.

Getting ready at or near the venue allows for:

– A relaxed timeline

– Fewer transportation gaps

– Consistent visual style throughout the day

This is really helpful during the winter months, when minimizing travel is ideal. I’ve also had couples get ready at nearby hotels, such as the Shinola Hotel, which is a great option.

How Much Does a Detroit Athletic Club Wedding Cost?

Pricing for a Detroit Athletic Club wedding varies depending on guest count, time of year, and which spaces you reserve.

While pricing can change, couples should generally expect:

– A food and beverage minimum

– Room rental fees

– On-site catering provided exclusively by the club

– Service and staffing fees

This venue is best suited for couples who prioritize a seamless, professionally managed experience and are comfortable investing in a higher-end wedding setting.

For the most accurate pricing, it’s always best to contact the Detroit Athletic Club directly, as packages and minimums can shift year to year.

Membership Requirement for Detroit Athletic Club Weddings

One thing that’s important to know when planning a Detroit Athletic Club wedding is that the venue operates as a private members-only club.

To host a wedding at the Detroit Athletic Club, you’ll need:

– A current Detroit Athletic Club member, or

– A member sponsor willing to associate their membership with your event

The venue requires this member sponsorship before moving forward with tours, pricing details, or a formal inquiry. Once a member sponsor is identified, the club can connect you with the appropriate events team to begin planning.

If you’re early in the process, this is something to confirm right away, especially if you’re considering the Detroit Athletic Club as your primary venue.

Detroit Athletic Club Wedding Parking & Transportation

Parking is another common question couples ask in their planning. Here’s a few things to know:

– Valet parking is typically available for guests

– Nearby garages provide additional options

– The downtown location makes it easy for guests staying at nearby hotels

For winter weddings especially, valet parking is a major perk and helps guests arrive comfortably. If you’re traveling between locations for portraits, particularly with your wedding party, a party bus is often the easiest option.

Another great option is renting a vintage car, which also makes for a beautiful photo-op. One of my Detroit Athletic Club couples, Susie and Alex, rented a 1940 Detroit Packard from Motor City Vintage Rentals, and it was the perfect backdrop for their portraits.

Best Time of Year for a Detroit Athletic Club Wedding

The Detroit Athletic Club is a strong choice year-round! Each season offers a slightly different feel.

Fall & Winter Weddings

Fall and winter are especially popular for Detroit Athletic Club weddings. The indoor spaces feel warm and elegant, and candlelit receptions pair well with the season.

Around this time of year, the Detroit Athletic Club is often decorated with holiday décor throughout the main areas of the club.

Spring & Summer Weddings

Spring and summer weddings benefit from rooftop access and brighter natural light for portraits. Even during warmer months, most events remain comfortably indoors.

Because the venue is largely weather-proof, couples rarely need backup plans.

“The first (and easiest!) decision we made for our wedding was hiring Patty, and I truly can’t imagine our experience without her. From our engagement shoot to our wedding day, she was absolutely incredible to work with — professional, kind, and so effortlessly talented. Patty has such a calming presence and made us feel comfortable and confident in front of the camera from the very beginning. She captured every moment so beautifully and naturally, and looking through our photos still brings me right back to how we felt that day. She’s not only an amazing photographer but also someone I would trust to capture any important moment in my life. Her eye for detail, timing, and emotion is unmatched. I can’t recommend her enough — if you’re lucky enough to have the chance to work with Patty, take it! We are and will be forever grateful for you, Patty!! xoxo”

Meet Patty Leonor Photo, Your Detroit Wedding Photographer

Hi, I’m Patty. I’m a Michigan-based wedding photographer serving Detroit, Grand Rapids, Chicago, and destinations beyond. I believe the best photos come from trust, connection, and giving couples the space to be fully present on their wedding day. That approach has guided me through more than 200 weddings over the last six-plus years, including several celebrations at the Detroit Athletic Club.

My work is rooted in documenting real moments with intention. I focus on how a day feels just as much as how it looks, paying attention to the people who matter most, the details you chose with care, and the moments that unfold naturally when you’re able to relax and enjoy your day. I bring a calm, steady presence so everything feels organized, comfortable, and genuine from start to finish.

Outside of weddings, I’m rarely without a vanilla iced coffee and I value thoughtful routines and slowing things down when possible. Those same values shape how I work and how I show up for my couples.

If you’d like to dive deeper and get to know me more, you can learn about my approach on my about page. If you’re ready to inquire for your Detroit Athletic Club wedding or are planning a celebration elsewhere, I’d love to hear from you! You can inquire with me.
